International Credit Union Day: Celebrating the Power of Community
On October 15, 2026, credit unions around the world celebrated International Credit Union Day, an annual event that recognizes the positive impact of credit unions since 1948. This year, we reflect on the role credit unions continue to play as trusted, community-focused financial partners in an increasingly complex world.
What makes credit unions different? Simply put, credit unions are owned by their members and exist to serve people, not shareholders. Every member has an equal voice, and profits are reinvested into better products, services, and community initiatives. The credit union philosophy of "people helping people" guides everything we do, from providing trusted financial advice to investing in the communities we call home.
At YOUR Credit Union, community involvement is at the heart of who we are. We are proud to support organizations that make a meaningful difference in the lives of local residents, including our long-standing partnerships with the Ottawa Network for Education (ONFE) and the Agape Centre in Cornwall. These organizations play an important role in strengthening our communities through education, food security, and support services.
To celebrate International Credit Union Day, we invited members, residents, and visitors to stop by any YCU branches on October 15th. In addition to treats for everyone, we made a donation for every person who visited, and were proud to donate $1,210 each to ONFE and the Agape Centre.
International Credit Union Day was an opportunity to celebrate the difference that cooperative banking makes. Together, we are building stronger communities, supporting local organizations, and helping people achieve financial well-being. We look forward to continuing to support our members throughout the upcoming year.
